Flan is that one dessert I can eat a whole lot of. However, these days, when portion control is part of my lifestyle, having flan is a real treat, and I don't take it from granted.
The recipe I shared here, is a basic flan. Flan can be made with many flavors, including, pana (breadfruit), calabaza (pumpkin), coffee, and much more.
I've been asked how to make a healthier version, but the only adjustments I can think of would be to replace regular sugar on the custard and caramel. with allulose or coconut sugar, because the latter two have lower glucose index. The evaporated milk can be replaced with coconut milk, and the condense milk with cream of coconut.
Do you have a healthier variation? Share it with us, and we might try to make it and post it too.
Here are the instructions on how to make it, in a video made by our friends from the Orange County Library:
Flan Ingredients
• 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
• 4 to 6 eggs (the more eggs, the denser)
• One 12oz can evaporated milk or 12 oz whole milk
• One 14 oz can condense milk
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
Flavor variations
4 oz cream of coconut
6 oz guava paste (melt and blend)
8 oz of cream cheese
